DiRT Rally Game Review.

Codemasters after DiRT Showdown which focused mainly on arcade racing back in 2012, they wanted to get back to their roots of racing, so they have made and released DiRT Rally. I want to say that it’s one the best Rally games ever made and you haven’t experienced anything like it before.

Having said that, let’s take it from the start.

Dirt Rally - 1.png

DiRT Rally is an authentic, realistic, rich Rally game. Your driving builds a relationship between yourself and the road that you have never seen that before in any videogame. Dirt Rally captures that realistic feeling of a Rally driver, it’s a very unforgivable game, every slight turn or corner can turn into destruction, every slight jump can become your “nightmare”. It’s an unforgivable game, but rewarding after you get the hang of it. The main objective on Rally is to have the best time in the track, in order to get the first place. The game features everything that you need to experience Rally like never before. You won’t be alone driving your car to finish, but you will have a co-driver as well who will be giving you directions and warnings while you are driving, you really should depend on him in order to finish the races if you do otherwise, you will end up possibly in a crash or in a cliff. If you can’t hear your co-driver don’t worry, the directions and the warnings that your co-driver gives you are on your HUD in the upper screen while you are driving, you can choose if you want the directions early, normally or later to be given at you from the menus. You have also a team crew who setup your car accordingly how you want it and fixes it as well, you can also manage your team by getting contacts who have different perks for your team each, but you should pay them with your credits that you earn by completing events. In the game there are some tutorial videos that are strongly recommended to watch before you start playing the game. It introduces you to the game and the narrator explains to you the chemistry of Rally and cars.

DiRT Rally modes include Career, it consists of championships which include different stages and tracks, it also includes Hillclimb the historic Pikes Peak in USA. The game includes a huge surprise as well which is FIA World Rallycross Champioship. There are also Online events that you can take part and win other online player times, there are also PVP events, which you can race with others at the same time, you can also play Rallycross online with others as well, plus you can play custom championships with friends or with other people online. In Dirt Rally every car is licensed, there is a huge variety of cars like 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 2000’s, 2010’s, 4WD, RWD, Group A, F2 kit cars and R4. There are also specific cars for Rallycross such as Rallycross Classic, Rallycross 1600’s and Rallycross Supercars. There are also specific cars for Hillclimb and a Modern car. You can also attach a huge variety of liveries on your car. You will have to purchase your cars with the credits that you earn by completing races. In some locations you will be racing on are Greece, Monaco, Germany, Wales, Finland and Sweden. In Rallycross you will be racing in England, Norway and Sweden. You will be also driving in every possible terrain and weather.

The only negative thing, but a good thing as well in DiRT Rally is that it’s really a hardcore game, and it requires patience to get the hang of it, but when you do it’s really a rewarding experience, it’s just fantastic. There are no assists such as rewind, so you could correct a mistake you made, there are no dynamic lines as well to see where to brake and accelerate. The game is very hardcore from the beginning. It’s going to be a challenge for Rally fans.

Dirt Rally made me experience something that I couldn’t before. It’s an amazing Rally experience that you will not easily forget. It’s fantastic to play with a controller, it should be amazing with a wheel as well. The visuals are just gorgeous and the sounds just marvelous, the cars sound like they supposed to be. It’s really realistic and that’s incredible.

Codemasters made another game that it’s one of the best in its genre. It’s a very nice game for people who want a challenge and love Rally. It’s a hard game, but I don’t count that as a reason not to enjoy it. I really enjoyed playing the game and I will continue to do so.

I give DiRT Rally a 10/10, it’s one the best Rally games ever made.

DiRT Showdown Game Review.

DiRT 3 was a huge successful racing game from Codemasters back in 2011, so the studio got back to work after their 2011 release to bring in 2012 on the market DiRT Showdown, which continues DiRT 3 success, but in a different way. DiRT Showdown is another amazing racing game which expands on the fun part of racing which is destroying everything found in your way, it’s an amazingly fun racer which you will not put down for a long time.

Dirt S- 1.jpg

DiRT Showdown gameplay differs from its predecessor, the game focuses on crashing and racing spectacle than racing most of the time (as it had Gymkhana) on DiRT 3. That’s a great thing, for the people who love seeing car parts flying away, AI crashing each other, old pile of tyres scattered on the track, a general mayhem. DiRT Showdown includes the Showdown tour which is your career mode and Multiplayer for Online, Lan or Split-Screen mayhem. The game includes a variety of modes which you will be able to play on Showdown Tour and on Multiplayer. The modes are divided in 3 categories. The first category is Racing, which includes Race Off, Domination and Eliminator. In Race Off you must be the 1st one to cross the finish line. In Domination, you will be trying to set the fastest lap time in each sector, each sector gives you points, the driver with the most points is the winner. In Eliminator, the last placed driver is eliminated from the event until only one winner remains, so make sure to get and keep the 1st place safe. Next categoty is Demolition which includes Rampage, Knock Out, Hard Target and 8 Ball. In Rampage, you should crash your opponents in spectacular ways, each way gives you points, the driver with the most points wins. In Knock Out, you should push your opponents out of the track-arena, the driver with the most points wins. In Hard Target, you should make the best survival time than your opponents for the win, who will try to take you out, avoid crashing at all costs. In 8 Ball, you will be driving in an 8 shaped tracks which cause amazing and spectacular crashes with AI in each turn, try to cross the finish line 1st for the win. The next and final category is Hoonigan which includes Trick Rush, Head 2 Head and Smash Hunter. In Trick Rush, you should beat the AI opponents time in tricks (Air, Smash, Donuts, Spin and Drift), complete the tricks faster than your opponents for the win.  In Head 2 Head its a battle between you and 1 opponent, the tracks for this are split in 2 parts, one for you and another for your opponent, the fastest driver to finish the tricks wins. Last, but not least, in Smash Hunter, you should smash the coloured walls in a sequence that it’s highlighted to you in the HUD, beat your opponents time for the 1st place. In Dirt Showdown, there is another mode which is Joyride. In Joyride you should complete the missions that are found in the pause menu, there are 2 areas that you should explore, its Battersea Compound and Yokohama Compound.

DiRT S- 2.jpg

DiRT Showdown includes a huge variety of fictional vehicles, from cars, vans to a hearse. There are some licensed cars as well, but they are for use only in Hoonigan modes. You can buy and upgrade your cars with the money that you earn by completing races in Showdown Tour and completing races in Multiplayer. The cockpit camera from DiRT 3 is absent this time in Showdown, but you can use the nose camera and the back camera. You will be driving in every weather condition, sunny, rainy, snowy, and night. The sunset looks amazing by the way, you are going to love it!

The game includes a Multiplayer mode as well which consists of Online, LAN, and Split-Screen. You can play Multiplayer on most of the modes of Showdown Tour, but there are some additional designed just for Multiplayer. The Multiplayer modes are Transporter, Smash & Grab and Speed Skirmish. In Transporter you should grab the flag and bring it to the base, the player who brings the flag to the base wins. In Smash & Grab, the players are divided in 2 teams, 1 team grabs the loot and the other team need to get a hold on it by hitting the opponents, the team that holds the loot for longest period of time wins. In Speed Skirmish, you should race through 6 checkpoints before the timer finish.

DiRT S- 3.jpg

DiRT Showdown have the same astonishing graphics from DiRT 3 engine, which are incredible and the audio is simply stunning. The game ships with another marvelous soundtrack which is super long and refreshing, it covers Rock, Rap, Electronic and Pop genres, and its still fresh to listen throughtout your playthrough.

DiRT Showdown is the meaning of fun and it still holds up today, so if you haven’t got the chance to play it, I definately reccomend it, give it a shot, you won’t be dissapointed.

Codemasters nailed it again in 2012 with DiRT Showdown, it’s one of the most accessible and fun racers of all time in the market. It’s still fun to play in 2016 same with DiRT 3.

I give DiRT Showdown a 9/10, it’s a perfect game that every racing game fan should experience.

The game is for Xbox 360 (and Xbox One via Backwards Compatibility Program), Playstation 3, and Steam for PC.

***Reviewer’s note: I have spent so many hours back in 2012 on release and throughout the years playing the game, so I can’t give you an estimate on how many hours I played this game. The publisher/developer sent me an Xbox 360 review copy for the purpose of the review.
